Curiosus - English Quiz Society

Curiosus, the English Quiz Society of Jesus and Mary College, since its conception in 2014, has aimed to cultivate a culture of quizzing within the college. The society has made a name for itself not only by actively participating in quizzing events, but also by being one of the best all-women teams in the Delhi University circuit. In addition to conducting quizzes independently, we also organise various quizzes at the intra and inter college levels.

Quizzes are organised around a variety of themes such that any person is sure to find an area of their liking – be it cinema, sports, MELA, history, fandom, current affairs, or India. Members of the society are frequently encouraged to come up with innovative ideas for quizzes in order to make the student population in JMC and outside realize the appeal of quizzing.

Curiosus tries to remain active on social media platforms, particularly Instagram, by posting short quizzes and trivia. All important activities of the society are updated there as well. You can follow us on:

Activities and Events Conducted in 2021-22

1. Independence Day Quiz
Date: 15 August 2021
The 75th Independence Day Quiz was an intra-college event conducted as part of JMC's celebration of Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav. The quiz delved into the country's rich history and looked at moments from India's freedom struggle.

2. Know-It-All Quiz
Date: 24 September 2021
An intra-society quiz meant for boosting team spirit, The Know-It-All Quiz was conducted on Google Meet. With an any-theme-goes style of questions, society members were challenged with trivia on sports, history, fandom, pop culture, literature, art, business, economics and current affairs.

3. MELA Quiz
Date: 13 October 2021
A quiz on the popular theme of Music, Entertainment, Literature and Art was organised at the inter-college level, with participants joining in from all over the country. 70+ teams took part in the prelims, held on Dare2Compete, and 5 teams were shortlisted for the Finals held on Google Meet.

4. The Curiosus Newsletter
The first ever edition of The Curiosus Newsletter was released on 2 February 2022 under the guidance of the office bearers of the academic session 2021-22, and it will from hereon be a semi-annual release. This newsletter aimed to bring quizzes and activities that one can solve at their own pace, without having to register for competitions or attend Zoom Meetings. The theme for this issue was Asian Culture, featuring a quiz on the topic, as well as recommendations by our members.

The newsletter team included the President (Avanthika Nambiar), Vice President (Vishnu Priya), General Secretary (Yashpriha Rai) and five society members namely Shraddha Shubhdarshini (Current Affairs Quiz), Shreya Baru (Asian Culture Quiz), Ridhima Kapur (Jumbled Sentences), Angelina (Design) and Shruti Singh (Editing and Proofreading).

It was a result of the constant effort of all the team members along with our Convenor (Ms. Richa Krishna Sharma) and Faculty Members (Dr. Jasmin and Dr. Aakanksha Natani) that our first edition of the newsletter was appreciated by everyone.

5. Spine to Screen Quiz
Date: 29 and 30 January 2022
Spine to Screen was an instagram quiz consisting of more than 20 questions held over a span of two days covering questions related to famous books and their screen adaptations. This quiz was a success in engaging audience as well as boosting the social media presence of the society.

6. Webinar on Civil Services Preparation
Date: 26th February 2022
Curiosus in collaboration with Ensure IAS organised a webinar on 'An early start towards preparation for the Civil Services exam'. This insightful session was taken by Mr. Sachin Jain (AIR 286, 2016), founder and Director of Ensure IAS, and more than 250 students from different colleges joined in to learn how to crack UPSC.

7. Quiztopia '22
Date: 11 and 12 March 2022
Quiztopia is the annual quiz fest of our society. This year marked the 4th edition of Quiztopia which was held online due to covid restrictions. The annual event comprised three distinct quiz competitions on the following themes:

  • Step up your Fandom Quiz - One of Curiosus's flagship events, the Step Up Your Fandom Quiz is for the readers and the binge-watchers, this time covering around 16 fandoms.
  • India Quiz - As the name suggests, this quiz was everything about India. Covering topics from history and geography to art and culture, the India Quiz tested the range of our knowledge.
  • Food and Travel Quiz - This quiz was designed for the wanderlust souls who wished to quench their thirst for traveling during the pandemic. It consisted of questions on various cuisines and travel destinations.

The prelims round of all the three quizzes was held on Dare2compete on 11 March 2022 and top 5 teams from each quiz got to compete in the finals round on 12 March, which was conducted on Google Meet.

8. St. Claudine Thévenet Quiz '22
Date: 6 April 2022
Our annual intra-college quiz, the St. Claudine Thévenet Quiz is a token of respect for the foundress of the Congregation of the Religious of Jesus and Mary, and subsequently our college. The 2022 edition was conducted offline at the JMC Hall, 4th floor and saw participation of students from different academic backgrounds.

9. Webinar on Women and Quizzing
Date: 16th April 2022
A webinar was organised on the topic 'Women and Quizzing' followed by a Q&A session, for the students of JMC. Leading female quizmasters Ami Goradia and Anuradha Dharwadkar discussed the challenges faced by women quizzers in this male dominated quizzing circuit. The society members found it really helpful and were motivated to take part in more and more offline quizzes as we shift from online to offline mode.
