JMC established its department of mathematics in 1987. The department has remained a landmark of excellence ever since. With the best and most dedicated faculty the department caters to the needs of around 200 students annually. A combination of classroom sessions, paper presentations and interactive sessions are held to help students get an understanding the importance and application of mathematics in everyday life.
The course focuses on helping students to become intellectually sound, disciplined and more focused. The course also grooms them to become more effective in the careers they opt for, be it teaching, research, finance, investment banking, etc.
MATHARENA a department festival is held every year and is a huge success as students from all Colleges in the university participate.
Realising the need for imparting information on gender specific problems and available means to resolve them, the department organised a one-day workshop on "Sexual Harassment at Workplace". It made students aware of legal, emotional and psychological aspects of the problem.
In addition, our faculty Dr. Shikha Singh and Dr Monica Rani organised a one-week workshop on self- defense. ACP Smt. Shashi Bala Kaushik, Parivartan Cell, Delhi Police and her team conducted the workshop. Around 80 students participated enthusiastically.
Dr. Indrakshi Dutta organised an academic talk session on "Number Theory". The workshop was convened by Dr. Shanta Laishram, Associate Professor of Mathematics at the Indian Statistical Institute.
Research: To encourage and equip students for undergraduate research, the department took the initiative to organize a 15 hours hands- on training, certification course on R in collaboration with Department of Economics and Department of Commerce.
As a result, the department got its first undergraduate research paper titled "Beauty norm: The undefined defined" published in the International conference on "Social Media Marketing: Opportunities and Challenges" held at Jesus and Mary college on March 28-29, 2019. This paper was presented by II year students Jasmine Saluja, Sheetal, Vibhu Sachdeva of B.Sc (Hons) Mathematics.
Paper titled 'Analysis of Fractal Patterns in the Prices of Agro-based commodities' has been accepted for publication in 3rd International Conference on Modern Mathematical Methods and High Performance Computing in Science & Technology (Jan, 9-11 2020) at Inderprastha Engineering College, Ghaziabad. This paper will be presented by III year students Neha Sam, Vidhi Vashishth, Yukti under the guidance of Dr. Monica Rani.
