Department of English

Established in 1968, the Department of English at Jesus and Mary College offers both graduate and postgraduate degrees. It is one of the best-ranked departments of Delhi University.

The faculty is well-known for its rigorous approach and uncompromising attitude, belying the common belief that English is an easy course. Regular internal assessments, class presentations, intense tutorial sessions and a packed timetable mark an average Literature student’s college life.  Luckily enough for the students, success does not come with a price. Rather, the faculty’s strict approach entitles them to a prize almost every year – The department has won the best March-Past squad innumerable times and consecutively for the past three years.

The distinguishing feature of the Department is its English Literary Association (ELA) which provides a wonderful platform to the students for exploring and experiencing canonical literatures in English as well as the emerging accents of contemporary literature. The ELA organizes and manages all the department events and seminars which include panel discussions, talks in collaboration with the DSC Prize nominees (awarded at the Jaipur Literature Fest), seminars, film screenings, academic writing workshops and non- scholastic events like Creative Writing and Short Story Writing. The Department’s annual literature festival, Literati, witnesses an ever- increasing footfall making the fest and its events a huge success.
