Right to Information

The Right to Information Act intends to set out the practical regime of Right to Information for citizens to enable them to access the information under the control of public authority in order to promote transparency and accountability in the working of such authority.Section 2(h) of the Act defines “public authority” as any authority or body or institution of self-governance established or constituted by or under the constitution or by law made by the Parliament or any state legislature or by notification issued by the appropriate government. Brief History

Jesus and Mary Congregation is one among many religious congregations who are dedicated to the education of the youth especially women. This religious congregation was founded by Saint Claudine Thevenet in Lyons (France) in 1818. Six sisters of the Order came to India in 1842 and the first institution started by them was St. Patrick’s School in Agra.Among the many schools founded by them all over the country was Convent of Jesus and Mary, New Delhi founded in 1919. It was also decided to start a College for women in Delhi and the college was founded in July 1968 as constituent college of the University of Delhi. The College opened with department offering English(Hons.) and B.A.(Pass) Courses with an enrolment of 116 students.The Staff consisted of Sr. M.Peter Claver as Principal, Sr. Magdalen, Lecturer and Head of Department of English and seven lady Lecturers. Sr.M.Stanislaus acted as cashier and there were two clerks, two office assistants and a Librarian. Fr. T. Mathias S.J. was the first Chairman of the Governing Body of the College.The College is situated on a spacious fifteen acre campus in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. The building has been planned very skillfully and the stately structures arising from a solid rock foundation and the lovely landscaping are admired by many, apart from creating a congenial environment for study.The aim of Jesus and Mary College is to make God known and loved by means of Christian education to all social milieu in keeping with the preference which St. Claudine had for the young and the poor. The College offers an integrated and all round education-intellectual, cultural, social, emotional, physical, aesthetic, moral and spiritual.The motto of the College is “THOU ART LIGHT, FILL ME WITH THY LIGHT.” The college true to its motto imparts education to the young students who come onto its portals with a thirst for knowledge and wisdom. The college excels in academic as well as in extra-curricular activities.Within five or six years Jesus and Mary College girls could opt for many of the Honours Courses they desired, including Economics, Political Science, Hindi and Psychology. To the more practical and business oriented among them, a B.Com. Pass Course and in 1977 an Honours Course leading to the Bachelor of Commerce Degree was added.We added one more feather to our cap by pioneering in 1994 the Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) Programme in collaboration with MACESE and Department of Education, (CIE), University of Delhi.The Multi Purpose Hall – was a long cherished dream of all of us at JMC. Much hard work and effort has gone onto its completion. We are proud of this accomplishment – a dream come true in the history of Jesus and Mary College. It was inaugurated in 2006 and blessed by Archbishop Vincent Concessao. The facilities offered are an auditorium, an area for indoor games, computer laboratory and seminar / conference rooms.Today the Jesus and Mary College is catering to 2500 students – 10 Honours Departments and B.A.Restructured Programme with 13 subject combination and Post graduation in English and Hindi.The Multi Purpose Hall – was a long cherished dream of all of us at JMC. Much hard work and effort has gone onto its completion. We are proud of this accomplishment – a dream come true in the history of Jesus and Mary College. It was inaugurated in 2006 and blessed by Archbishop Vincent Concessao. The facilities offered are an auditorium, an area for indoor games, computer laboratory and seminar / conference rooms.The College provides an ALL ROUND FORMATION of the students. They are challenged to pursue an education that combines excellence in humanistic and cultural development.The College ensures the physical, intellectual and mental health of students. Various departments organize seminars and talks by eminent speakers on subjects of academic interest from time to time, to take the students beyond class-room teaching. Facilities are provided for indoor and outdoor games. A well equipped gymnasium is available for staff and students. Our students regularly take part and excel in inter-college intervarsity, national and international sports events. The College has about 20 societies like debating, quiz, peace, green, western and Indian music, choreography, dramatics, etc. to provide opportunity for self development and display of their talents.The College has a large Library automated with computer and internet facilities.The College also has Canteen which caters to the Staff and students. It was started in 1970 by Sr.Flora.JMC takes the task of educating young women and training them in responsibility and accountability, to take their positions in the competitive world. The College looks forward to its Golden Jubilee. We have consistently fared well in inter college festivals and in various competitive events.

Duties of the College

To conduct academic programmes for the preparation of under-graduate and post-graduate examinations in various faculties available in the college, and to undertake activities that are contributory to this object.
